Jobs in Digital Sales

Looking for a new job in digital sales?

Learn about working and applying within digital sales, the different roles, skills, career opportunities and salaries.
This will help you choose a commercial role that fits both your experience and the direction in which you want to develop.

Working in digital sales

Digital sales is about selling digital products, services and platforms. This includes SaaS, e-commerce, online media and digital technology, where you need to understand the proposition, the customer and the sales cycle. Day-to-day work differs greatly between organisations, ranging from short, transactional sales cycles to complex enterprise processes involving several decision-makers.

Some roles focus primarily on creating and qualifying new opportunities. In others, the emphasis is on discovery, negotiation and closing, growing existing accounts, customer adoption or strategic partnerships. As you gain experience, your responsibilities often shift from a defined part of the funnel towards larger deals, more complex stakeholders, forecasting, commercial strategy or managing a team.

What digital sales roles are there?

Job titles within digital sales are not standardised. At one employer, an Account Executive may manage the entire process from prospecting to contract, while the same title elsewhere focuses primarily on discovery, demonstrations, negotiations and closing. Account management and customer success may also overlap, but often differ in their commercial objectives, product-adoption responsibilities and accountability for retention or expansion.

That is why you should look beyond the job title. For every vacancy, compare:

  • which product, service or platform you will be selling.
  • which customer group and market segment you will target.
  • whether the role focuses on lead generation, new business, account growth, customer success, partnerships or pre-sales.
  • the length of the sales cycle and the average deal size.
  • which quota, revenue, retention or pipeline KPIs you will be responsible for.
  • how base salary, bonus and any accelerators are structured.
  • what support you will receive from marketing, sales development, product and customer success.
  • which CRM, forecasting and sales-enablement tools you will use.

This prevents you from applying based on a familiar title when the commercial responsibility and day-to-day work do not match what you are looking for.

What can you earn in digital sales?

What you earn in digital sales cannot be captured accurately in a single average. Our own vacancy data shows that your role, seniority, market, deal complexity and responsibility for revenue or customer retention all have a significant influence on your base salary. Variable pay can also be an important part of the total package.

Starter or Junior

0 – 2 years of experience

Approximately € 30,000 to € 40,000 gross per year (excluding bonus)

Junior roles often focus on prospecting, lead qualification, CRM discipline and learning how to conduct commercial conversations. Roles such as SDR and BDR usually fall within this stage. Base salary depends greatly on the market, the guidance you receive and the balance between fixed and variable pay.

Salaries by role

Are you not looking for a job yourself, but seeking to strengthen your commercial team?

We would be happy to help you find the right solution to your recruitment challenge.

How do you find a good digital sales job?

A good next step offers more than a higher base salary or a better job title. Also consider the proposition you will sell, the maturity of the sales team, the quality of the pipeline and the responsibilities you can build.

First determine how you want to develop. Would you like to improve at prospecting and pipeline development, close new business independently, grow existing accounts, improve customer adoption, develop partnerships or move towards the more technical side of pre-sales? Use that goal to compare vacancies based on their actual content.

Consider the following:

  • What are you selling, to whom, and which problem does it solve?
  • How long is the sales cycle and what is the average deal size?
  • Will you mainly work on new customers, existing accounts or customer retention?
  • How realistic are the quota and expected pipeline?
  • How are base salary, bonus, commission and accelerators structured?
  • What support will you receive from marketing, sales development, product and customer success?
  • How mature are the CRM, forecasting, sales-enablement and reporting processes?
  • Can you learn from experienced colleagues or a strong commercial manager?
  • How is success measured and which responsibilities can you build over the next one or two years?

During the application process, also ask about actual quota attainment, average sales cycles, win rates and the split between inbound and outbound. This will give you a more realistic view of the environment in which you will be expected to deliver results.

Do not only ask yourself: can I do this job now? Also ask: which customers, deals and responsibilities will I be able to manage independently in two years’ time?
