Looking for a new job in digital sales?
Learn about working and applying within digital sales, the different roles, skills, career opportunities and salaries.
This will help you choose a commercial role that fits both your experience and the direction in which you want to develop.
Digital sales is about selling digital products, services and platforms. This includes SaaS, e-commerce, online media and digital technology, where you need to understand the proposition, the customer and the sales cycle. Day-to-day work differs greatly between organisations, ranging from short, transactional sales cycles to complex enterprise processes involving several decision-makers.
Some roles focus primarily on creating and qualifying new opportunities. In others, the emphasis is on discovery, negotiation and closing, growing existing accounts, customer adoption or strategic partnerships. As you gain experience, your responsibilities often shift from a defined part of the funnel towards larger deals, more complex stakeholders, forecasting, commercial strategy or managing a team.
Job titles within digital sales are not standardised. At one employer, an Account Executive may manage the entire process from prospecting to contract, while the same title elsewhere focuses primarily on discovery, demonstrations, negotiations and closing. Account management and customer success may also overlap, but often differ in their commercial objectives, product-adoption responsibilities and accountability for retention or expansion.
That is why you should look beyond the job title. For every vacancy, compare:
This prevents you from applying based on a familiar title when the commercial responsibility and day-to-day work do not match what you are looking for.
What you earn in digital sales cannot be captured accurately in a single average. Our own vacancy data shows that your role, seniority, market, deal complexity and responsibility for revenue or customer retention all have a significant influence on your base salary. Variable pay can also be an important part of the total package.
0 – 2 years of experience
Approximately € 30,000 to € 40,000 gross per year (excluding bonus)
Junior roles often focus on prospecting, lead qualification, CRM discipline and learning how to conduct commercial conversations. Roles such as SDR and BDR usually fall within this stage. Base salary depends greatly on the market, the guidance you receive and the balance between fixed and variable pay.
3 – 6 years of experience
Approximately € 35,000 to € 70,000 gross per year (excluding bonus)
With several years of relevant experience, you are more likely to take independent responsibility for customers, deals or your own segment. We see many new business, account management, customer success and partnerships roles within this range. The upper end primarily applies to more complex propositions and greater commercial responsibility.
6+ years of experience
Approximately € 45,000 to € 70,000 gross per year (excluding bonus)
Senior sales professionals often work with larger accounts, longer sales cycles, strategic negotiations or complex digital solutions. Higher base salaries are mainly found in enterprise sales, pre-sales and roles with demonstrable responsibility for revenue growth or key customer relationships.
6+ years of experience
Approximately € 60,000 to € 100,000+ gross per year (excluding bonus)
In Lead, Head of, Director and commercial management roles, strategy, forecasting, team development and organisational growth become increasingly important. Bonus, commission or other variable pay may cause the total package to differ substantially from the base salary.
In addition to your level of experience, several factors determine what you can earn within digital sales. Your role, the complexity of the solution and the commercial impact of your position make a particularly significant difference.
Based on 560 vacancies, pre-sales has the highest average annual salary at € 65,000, followed by new business at € 60,000 and partnerships at € 55,600. Customer success averages € 52,000, account management € 46,800 and lead generation € 43,400. The difference between the median and the average shows that outliers can influence the average. This is more pronounced in digital sales jobs than in digital marketing jobs.
See the executive jobs page for information about lead, management and executive roles within digital marketing and digital sales.

The figure for 2026 is higher, but it is based on less data and may still change. Differences between years may also reflect the mix of roles that were open in each year; the full dataset is based on Finest People vacancies.
The median annual salary grows by € 1,727, or approximately 3.8%, per year.

The skills that matter most depend heavily on your role and the stage of the customer relationship for which you are responsible. The role categories below correspond directly to Finest People’s Digital Sales specialisation.
Across these roles, employers primarily look for professionals who can combine commercial results with a strong understanding of the customer, the proposition and the sales cycle. CRM discipline, rigorous discovery, clear communication, reliable forecasting and effective collaboration with marketing, product and customer success are often just as important as persuasion.
AI and automation are particularly relevant to research, prospecting, personalisation, conversation analysis and administration. They create the greatest value when they improve the quality and speed of the sales process without sacrificing personal contact or relevance.
Within lead generation, you create and qualify new commercial opportunities. This includes outbound, inbound, prospecting, automation and pipeline development.
Employers look for strong research and communication skills, discipline in CRM and sequencing, and the ability to determine quickly whether a prospect fits the proposition.
Within new business, you are responsible for winning new customers, markets and revenue. Common roles include Account Executive, Business Developer, Sales Manager and New Business Manager.
Important skills include discovery, consultative selling, presenting, negotiating, closing and reliable forecasting.
Within account management, you develop existing customer relationships and identify commercial opportunities within accounts.
Employers look for professionals who are strong in stakeholder management, account planning, negotiation, upselling and cross-selling, and who can combine commercial growth with a sustainable customer relationship.
Within customer success, you work on onboarding, adoption, customer satisfaction and retention. The objective is to ensure that customers gain demonstrable value from the product or service.
Important skills include expectation management, product knowledge, recognising risks and growth opportunities, and using adoption, health scores and customer value to guide your work.
Within partnerships, you establish and develop strategic collaborations and partner networks. This is common within SaaS, online media, e-commerce and platform organisations.
Employers look for experience with partner strategy, negotiation, joint propositions, co-selling and managing different interests within a wider ecosystem.
Within pre-sales, you connect commercial and technical expertise. You clarify the customer’s requirements, deliver demonstrations and translate complex propositions into an appropriate solution.
Employers look for strong product knowledge, discovery and presentation skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with sales, product and technology teams.
Are you not looking for a job yourself, but seeking to strengthen your commercial team?
We would be happy to help you find the right solution to your recruitment challenge.
A good next step offers more than a higher base salary or a better job title. Also consider the proposition you will sell, the maturity of the sales team, the quality of the pipeline and the responsibilities you can build.
First determine how you want to develop. Would you like to improve at prospecting and pipeline development, close new business independently, grow existing accounts, improve customer adoption, develop partnerships or move towards the more technical side of pre-sales? Use that goal to compare vacancies based on their actual content.
Consider the following:
During the application process, also ask about actual quota attainment, average sales cycles, win rates and the split between inbound and outbound. This will give you a more realistic view of the environment in which you will be expected to deliver results.
Do not only ask yourself: can I do this job now? Also ask: which customers, deals and responsibilities will I be able to manage independently in two years’ time?
