Looking for a new job in digital marketing?
Learn about working and applying within digital marketing, the different specialisms, skills, career opportunities and salaries.
This will help you choose a role that fits both your specialism and the direction in which you want to develop.
Digital marketing is a broad field. At one employer, you may be responsible for almost the entire online marketing mix as a digital marketer, while at another organisation you fully manage a single channel, such as SEA, SEO, CRM or paid social. You will find these differences at e-commerce companies, agencies, scale-ups, publishers, non-profits and international organisations.
Some roles are highly hands-on and revolve around setting up and optimising campaigns. In other positions, the focus is on strategy, budget allocation, data analysis or managing agencies and specialists. This breadth gives you the opportunity to start as a generalist and specialise later, or to progress from a single channel into performance, growth or a broader marketing role. As you gain experience, your work often shifts from executing campaigns to identifying the biggest growth opportunities, deciding which channels deserve more budget and demonstrating how marketing contributes to business objectives.
Job titles within digital marketing are not standardised. At one employer, a Digital Marketer may be responsible for Google Ads, Meta, email and content, while the same title elsewhere describes a primarily strategic or coordinating role. A Performance Marketer can likewise be a specialised paid-media position, but it may also be a broad role combining CRO, analytics, CRM and complete funnels.
That is why you should look beyond the job title. For every vacancy, compare:
This prevents you from applying based on a familiar title when the day-to-day work does not match what you are looking for.
What you earn in digital marketing cannot be captured accurately in a single average. Our own vacancy data shows that your salary is influenced not only by work experience, but also by your specialism and your responsibility for budgets, strategy, data or a team.
0 – 2 years of experience
Approximately € 31,000 to € 45,000 gross per year
At the start of your career, your salary depends greatly on the type of role and the guidance you receive. In our own vacancies, performance marketing traineeships start at approximately € 35,000 per year. Junior roles in digital marketing, marketplaces and related product positions range up to approximately € 42,000 to € 45,000 per year.
3 – 6 years of experience
Approximately € 45,000 to € 65,000 gross per year
With several years of relevant experience, salaries often range from € 45,000 to € 65,000 per year. We see many roles within SEA, performance marketing, SEO, content and CRM in this range. The more independently you work and the clearer your specialism, the more likely you are to reach the upper end of this range.
6+ years of experience
Approximately € 60,000 to € 80,000+ gross per year
Senior specialists and experienced digital marketers can progress to salaries of € 60,000 to € 80,000 or more. The highest salaries are mainly found in roles with responsibility for large media budgets, complex data and tracking structures, international growth or the complete strategy for a channel.
6+ years of experience
Approximately € 75,000 to € 90,000+ gross per year
In Lead, Head of and management roles, strategy, team development and commercial responsibility become increasingly important. Salaries of € 75,000 to € 90,000 or more are not uncommon at this level. Our own data includes senior Head of Marketing positions with salaries of up to € 115,000 plus a bonus.
In addition to your level of experience, several factors determine what you can earn within digital marketing. Your specialism, responsibilities and the impact you have on the organisation make a particularly significant difference.
The salaries by specialism are shown below, based on our vacancy data from 2012 to 2026. More recent years generally show higher salaries.
Unlike digital sales jobs, salary outliers are uncommon within digital marketing.

The skills that matter most depend heavily on your specialism. A paid advertising role requires different capabilities from a position in CRM, content or analytics. The fields below correspond directly to Finest People’s specialisations. Open a card to learn more about the related disciplines, roles and expertise.
Across these specialisations, employers primarily look for professionals who have in-depth knowledge of one field while also understanding how channels, data, creativity, technology and commerce influence one another. Strong digital marketers are therefore often T-shaped: specialised where necessary and broad enough to collaborate effectively with other disciplines.
AI and automation are not separate specialisms, but they are becoming relevant in virtually every field. The greatest value does not come from simply using a new tool, but from applying AI purposefully to improve analysis, accelerate production, enable smarter personalisation and support well-founded experiments.

Employers look for experience with customer journeys, segmentation, personalisation, customer data and marketing technology. In more technical roles, knowledge of HTML, CSS, SQL, APIs and integrations is a clear advantage.

Leadership & Executive includes senior roles such as Team Lead, Head of, Manager, Director, VP and C-level.
In addition to subject-matter expertise, these roles require strategic insight, team development, stakeholder management and commercial responsibility. You translate organisational objectives into a clear agenda for marketing, e-commerce or digital sales.
Are you not looking for a job yourself, but seeking to strengthen your team?
We would be happy to help you find the right solution to your recruitment challenge.
A good next step offers more than a higher salary or a better job title. Also consider the environment you will join, the expertise already present in the team and the responsibilities you can build.
First determine how you want to develop. Would you like greater depth in performance, SEO, CRM, content or data? Or are you looking for a broad role that allows you to combine several disciplines? Use that goal to compare vacancies based on their actual content.
Consider the following:
Especially when you are relatively early in your career, good guidance can be more valuable than a higher title. A role in which you work with experienced colleagues on substantial campaigns and challenges can help you progress faster than a position where you must work everything out on your own.
Do not only ask yourself: can I do this job now? Also ask: what will I be able to do here in two years that I cannot do today?
